Building the Bourbon Sweatlodge, Laura S. Walker State Park, Waycross, Ga. (DS09)
While four of us told stories in the tent, somebody spilled a lot of bourbon. Despite the humidity, the elixir evaporated immediately, bringing a strangely welcome weight to the thick southern night.
Here we are, setting up the tent under the DSmobile's highbeams. I remember that the park ranger (whose herpetological photos are on Flickr) made a special trip to our campsite to tell us about the impending doom he saw on the radar screen.

Time Machine's method for deleting old backups is actually a huge pain in the ass.
Mac's Time Machine sounds like a great idea: a program that automatically backs up your computer every time you connect a specific external hard drive. What it doesn't tell you is that each time it creates a new backup, it deletes the last one by moving the old backup to the Trash.
Now what a lot of people don't know is that when files are in the Trash, they are still taking up space where they were. This is totally counter-intuitive, because there's no way for a user to see that the space is taken by looking at the disc/directory where the space is actually taken. You can only see these files and folders in the Trash. Even more confusingly, the disc space is taken on an external drive...and the Trash exists on your computer.
There are message board posts all over the web with new Mac users panicking when their Time Machine drive becomes totally full. The only way to remedy this situation is to connect the external device to your Mac and empty the Trash.
That's what I'm doing now. In fact, I am now waiting for my computer to delete 341,000 files from my external drive so I can back up once more.
Lucky for me, it turns out that any image that I marked as "locked" on my digital cameras requires an extra click to delete. Apparently a large portion of my most recent 19,600 photos are "locked." I'm going to be here for a while.

MIT Radio is Unreal.
Add WMBR to the list of reasons why Boston is one of the best places in America to create and enjoy music. I've been blown away by the quality of the playlists on the following shows:
Luckily, you can get these shows for free over the interweb (and I can get a clear signal atop Clarendon Hill). Stream at http://wmbr.mit.edu.
- Backwoods, Sat 10a-12p. Old country, r&b, rockabilly.
- Late Risers' Club, Weekdays 10a-12p. Punk of every description.
- Lost and Found, Weekdays 12-2p. Soul, funk.

Why are 60-85% of the comments on any Boston Globe article disgustingly racist?

Places I would rather be right now:
- Lawrence, Kansas
- Saint John, New Brunswick
Reasons:
- No one will come looking for me.
- Far from people and things that I don't like.
- Low cost of living.
- One city is starkly serene and industrial; one is a mini-Austin that provides a stimulating intellectual environment.
- One city is for writing and the other is for music-making.

Allston
looks like a gigantic Hot Topic on Ellis Island. Any neighborhood that so completely and continuously lives up to its stereotypes is a winner in my book.
And so: Infrastructure will be renting a practice space in Rock City. Much interestingness will come of this.

Dear MBTA,
You might like to know that the electric heat in the Davis Square Station men's room is still on from last winter. I know that winter ended just three weeks ago, but considering the 8 billion dollars in debt you face, you might like to save some electricity. We appreciate having a safe and legal place to pee when we get off the last train of the night, but this situation reeks of waste. In fact, it reeks like an underground piss sauna on a summer night. Please turn the heat off.
